What does this service do?
The HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccine protects girls from the strains of the human papillomavirus responsible for causing 70% of cervical cancers (strains 16 and 17).
Who is eligible for the HPV vaccination?
The scheduled age for the HPV vaccine is girls in year 8, aged 12-13. This will be delivered by the school nursing service.
However, we are currently undergoing a catch-up programme:
Catch-up programme
The catch-up programme is running until September 2010.
It is being delivered in schools by the school nursing service to girls in:

- Year 11 aged 15-16 (born between 01.09.93 to 31.8.94)
The vaccine is also being offered in GP practices to girls in:

- Year 13 aged 17-18 (born between 01.09.91 to 31.08.92).
After September 2010, the vaccine will continue to be offered in GP surgeries to girls in years 12 and 13 up to the age of 18.
What happens if girls miss an appointment?
Girls who miss appointments will have the opportunity to attend catch-up clinics run by the school nursing service and, if necessary, they can complete their course during the following academic year.
How can I access this service?
Vaccinations will be delivered in schools by the school nursing service or at your GP practice.
- Older girls should contact their GP about the catch-up programme
